A LIFETIME IN CONSTRUCTION
 
ENGINEER EDUARDO CAMPIGLIA HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE, THROUGH HIS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, THAT SOME EMBLEMATIC WORKS WERE TRANSFORMED INTO REALITY. He graduated as an engineer in the 70’S, BUT HIS ENTREPRENEURSHIP SPIRIT HAD BEGUN BEFORE, IN THE FAMILY HOME. FROM THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE PRESIDENCY TO CARRASCO AIRPORT AND FROM THE SODRE AUDITORIUM TO MULTIPLE BUILDINGS OF HOUSING, HIS SIGNATURE LARGELY DEFINES SU FIRMA DEFINE EN GRAN MEDIDA THE CITY PROFILE.
 
Your family had a shoe store and you started working there. What teaching did you get from that time?
That fighting in family (team) with much dedication, you can produce with joy.
 
Campiglia is of Italian origin. What good things about “tanos” do you see in your family?
The creativity of the Italians on behalf of my father and the strong character of the Basques on behalf of my mother.
 
They say you enjoy your grandchildren a lot. What things do you share with them?
All what I can: paint, play ball, hide and seek the dolls...
 
You collect scale cars. ¿How many of them do you have? ¿Where do you get them from?
39 years ago I started to buy them as presents for my son Germán. After that, more than 20 years ago, he gave them back to me; I continued to give myself instead of giving. I get them in the way and I bring them when I travel.
 
Your company has built countless works. When you visit them, which one impresses you most?
The one that impresses me most and that is more than 30 years old, is the recycling of a shack that was falling apart. We recovered it with blocks, old wires and land of the place with Portland and it is still standing. I think it will continue for many more years.
 
If you thought of a major work with the Campiglia seal to last in time, without budget limit or profitability variables, what characteristics would be highlighted in that project?
I do not conceive works without budget limit. In every work we participate we try to give more than what the market offers. A work that would be a pride could be a very beautiful work but that is very efficient from the point of view of energy and the design of spaces.
 
We Uruguayans usually hear that building in this country is very expensive. ¿Do you believe so?
Yes, it is very expensive but also very good. Our culture does not accept low quality constructions.
 
What Real Estate ventures of other times do you consider admirable?
“Centenario” Stadium and Building “Panamericano”.
 
How did comfort evolve in construction between its beginnings and today? What does a middle-class family look for in a building?
More functionality, better day lighting, people look for location, common services, garages, less self-sacrificing surface.
 
Why did you choose the neighborhood you live in?
When I got married I wanted to stay in the neighborhood where I was born -Luis Alberto de Herrera Ave. and San Martín Ave. - but my wife liked Pocitos Neighborhood. I left my neighborhood more than 40 years ago but I continue visiting it with joy and love.
 
One of the most recent constructions of your company, "Estrellas del Sur", is at “Sur” Neighborhood, near Downtown. Is it the booming neighborhood to live?
I think it is ideal because it is close to everything and offers an excellent quality of life because of the particularities of the project.
 
As head of a company and looking back, what were your key successes?
A lot of work with joy, love and closeness to staff, customers and team.
 
Who do you consider your "right hand"?
I have many right hands, I am very little.
 
What are your biggest luxuries?
Living in Uruguay and with the whole family nearby.
 
What moments of your life would you choose to live again?
I choose today living with increasing intensity.
 
Do you feel part of a generation?
I am a great-grandson of Italians and Basques and I feel part of a generation that struggles with great force to fully surpass themselves.
 
How do you imagine your company on the stage of Uruguay in the next decade?
As a leading company in quality services and products.
 
Do you think that you will end your career by retiring?
How do you imagine that still distant personal future? I think I will continue to fight with joy until I leave.
